In each painting and artist decides how far in one direction or the other to explore. The peonies, vase and peony bud are rendered very realistically overall while the background and some petals of the peonies are implied more abstractly. My favorite part of this painting is the single stroke on the left side of the magenta “Karl Rosenfield” peony that implies the exquisite form of a petal.
